The Problem
Since the mid1800a emission of carbon dioxide (the major greenhouse gas) from fossil fuel combustion have skyrocketed and caused a gradual increase in the global temperature. These changes are accompanied by a degradation of the environment caused by the large use of our natural resources and large amount of waste and trash. Unless we reduce the pollution that trap the sun’s heat in the atmosphere by reducing our energy consumption and conserving resources, our environment and our health will change dramatically in the no-so-distant future.
Consequences of climate change include sea level rise, extreme weather events (such as severe droughts and cyclones), loss of wildlife and habitats, and disease outbreaks.
The Solution
Although climate change is a global problem, there are things we can do in our personal lives to cut our greenhouse gas emissions (that is our carbon footprint) and contribute to a global climate solution. We can also work with town official to make changes at the community level.
Our Mission
Our mission is to position the town of Westwood to meet the challenges of sustainable growth. Sustainability means living with the minimum impact on the environment, including animals, plants, and natural resources.
Actions That We Could Take
As members of the Westwood Environmental Committee we propose to carry out the following actions:
- contact the Selectman to learn how we can form an official town Committee with a clear mandate;
- invite an EPA representative to present the EPA Community Energy Challenge to Town officials:
- conduct an energy audit of town buildings and discuss options for reducing utilities costs (as part of the EPA Challenge);
- conduct an energy fair to promote reduction of home energy consumption through energy conservation and the use of renewable energy sources;
- investigate the possibility of a solar or wind installation at the high school;
- discuss with town officials an expansion of current recycling efforts;
- plant trees;
- build a web site for the Environmental Committee;
- gather information on actions taken in other towns and establish collaborations with similar committees in other towns.
