Waste Management Recycling Facility:

Mary Joyce, Steve Olanoff and Wendy Muellers took a tour of the Avon Waste Management Recycling Facility in August.  We were able to view how this Single Stream Facility handles a mixture of plastics, glass, paper, cardboard and aluminum very quickly!  We received some new information for Westwood residents regarding recycling with Waste Management!!
List of items that CAN be placed in recycling bins:
-Plastic containers numbered #1 - #7 (2 gallons or less)
-Corrugated boxes/Cardboard (No pizza boxes or food-contaminated cardboard)
-Glass containers (brown, blue, green or clear glass)
-Aluminum containers/foil (no food residue)
-Tin and steel cans (no food residue)
-Telephone books. magazines and catalogs
-Junk mail (window envelopes and inserts OK)
-Cereal boxes (remove plastic liner)
-Brown paper bags
-Paper, including newspaper, office paper, colored paper, fax paper, receipts (staples OK)
-Waxed Cardboard juice/milk containers (no food residue)
Waste Management requests that residents please avoid placing any plastic film (i.e. plastic grocery bags, plastic wrap from products purchased in stores, plastic sheets used in shipping and Tyvek mailing envelopes) in the recycling bins.  Any items that are placed inside a plastic bag are processed as trash at the recycling facility - these items will NOT be recycled!!!!  Plastic film gets caught in the conveyor belts at the facility, and so anything with plastic film around it is pulled out of the recycling stream.
